To grow the Body of Christ, by Word and Sacrament, bringing people to God.
Our History
In 1876, a small number of Belton residents purchased land which is now the corner of the HEB parking lot at 6th Avenue and North East Street, and erected a small frame building in 1898, which was designated a mission of St. Mary’s Church in Temple, part of the Diocese of Galveston. The property on which the mission church stood, was sold to the Belton ISD in 1959 and proceeds used to purchase five acres in north Belton.
Fr. Frederick Schmidt, a bilingual Holy Cross priest from New York City, was named administrator of the Christ the King Mission, now part of the Diocese of Austin, and in 1969, built a multipurpose building now called the Christus Center. Fr. Schmidt was succeeded by Fr. Luis Dussan in 1972, then by Fr. Oliver Johnson who was named Mission Administrator. Fr. Oliver Johnson was appointed the first Pastor of Christ the King Parish, and purchased a house on 15th Avenue to function as a Rectory; in April 1974, ground was broken for a fellowship hall containing five classrooms, and one large room and a kitchen, enabling the multipurpose building to be used entirely for Worship.
In 1979, Fr. Johnson was succeeded by Fr. Victor Goertz, then Fr. Vaughn Meiller, Fr. Donald Chatham (who purchased property for the site of the New Church), Msgr. Marion Adomanczyk, Fr. Charles Davis (who conducted a major renovation of the Church interior to include stained glass windows constructed by parishioners, installed new pews, and built a new Rectory in March 1988), Fr. John Boiko, Fr. Rocky Vaz (who built a Religious Education Center under the direction of Tom Vitek and volunteers from the Parish, and in 1998, built the “new Church” attached to the original building and the Religious Education building), then succeeded by Fr. Harry Dean.
In 2001, by Fr. Richard (Dick) Hudson implemented and instituted numerous programs; such as: Acolytes and Altar Servers, the formation of the Knghts of Columbus 4th Degree Assembly (2766), renovated the original "Day Chapel", and purchased two portable buildings which were much needed for classroom and ministry meetings. Fr. Dick was also instrumental in celebrating Christ The King's 40th Anniversary, which including the Belton and Temple communities.
In 2010 and for the following four short years, Fr. James Misko overcame tremendous parish and community challenges with such projects involving: the Main Sanctuary renovation, the Day Chapel Renovation (destroyed by fire) which is now known as the Christus Center and the Administrative Offices and Parish Hall renovations. Other achievements included landscape beautification, the hiring of a Director of Youth Ministry and a Director of Faith and Formation and brought our largest annual fundraiser, SpringFest, to a new level.
In 2014, Fr. John Kim, became pastor and demonstrated his "geekish" and frugal capabilities. Beginning in July of 2019, Fr. Sang Quan became the newest administer of Christ the King. In of June of 2020 Fr. Sang was named pastor and has already had a tremendous impact on the spiritual life of the parish and is looking forward to leading us in our upcoming capital campaign.
Christ the King Catholic Church has ministered over the years to our community, such as sheltering Hurricane Rita refugees, participating in Meals on Wheels, and assisting Belton Helping Hands, to name few. In November, 2009, the City of Belton honored the 40th Anniversary Celebration and commended Christ the King Catholic Church for its many years of service in Christianity to the citizens of Belton and its surrounding communities. In 2019, our parish celebrated our 50th jubilee with a beautiful Mass at the Bell County Expo Center attended by Bishop Joe Vasquez, Vicar General James Misko, and over 1,000 of our faith community. May God continue to bless us our community in the next 50 years!
